A simple question, so perhaps out of context. What is the context? Decide for yourself, and then see what you may do with the provided 20 possible answers. 01. It has been erected on the centurial mating ground of the monster. That´s right: the beast is horny and will attract another of its kind.
02. It buried its eggs there two or three centuries ago, and now returned as its offspring is about to hatch.
03. Two adolescent of this village climbed down deep into THE FORBIDDEN CAVE and disturbed it. It followed their smell to their “nesting ground” and now deals with this “pest”. If the villagers find out, they are going to sacrifice the two to the monster (which is not going to make a difference).
04. Some vengeful witch summoned it to avenge the death of her “sister”, whom the villagers burned a year ago.
05. This is a “show of force” by somebody that controls the beast. The ruler received a message by this villain, with which he (or she?) demands a chest full of gold “or else…”
06. Seven generations ago, when this monster still was a yearling, the ancestors of the current people drove the (then much smaller) creature off. Now, it returns to reclaim its territory.
07. A nearby monolithic circle was disrupted, and now the unregulated mystic energies bring forth hideous monsters in irregular intervals. The village just happens to be the first center of population to become aware of (and attacked by) these monsters.
08. The perons in charge of this settlement enraged god (or “a god” or “the gods”): this creature is a divine curse!
09. Monsters all of a sudden appear EVERYWHERE in the country! This is the beginning of a new era of turmoil and chaos.
10. It wants to build a nest for itself, and the site of the settlement matches its preferred habitat for doing so. The village itself just happens to be a pleasently close source of easily accessible material.
11. Three or four generations ago, the people abandoned a tradition of human sacrifice. Each soul kept the monster asleep for years to come. Now, time is up and the monster rises again.
12. The settlement decimated its usual prey so much that the monster now starts to adapt to other food sources: the village´s lifestock and inhabitants.
13. It came bursting out of a recently dug well. The digging woke it up from slumber.
14. The monster was driven out of its territory by a yet bigger monster, and thereby was forced to migrate into this area.
15. The settler´s recently begun to encroach on the holy grounds of a long forgotten temple of ancient times. The monster is said temple´s guardian.
16. The monster does the local tyrant´s bidding. If somebody dares to challenge his rule and laws, he (or she) sends the monster to destroy the whole settlement or village the culprit hailed from.
17. The monster is in love with somebody in the settlement. When the NPC was just a child, it was “the invisible friend”. Now, as the NPC has grown up, it wanted more than just friendship. After being refused, it decided to destroy the village and kill the people. Hell knows no fury like that of a scorned monster!
18. The sound of the bells of the lately erected church drive it into a murderous rage!
19. It wants the women. All of them. It will seed them with its spawn, so that new little monsters will rupture out of their wombs 4d6+4 days later.
20. A hidden force of cosmic/god-like proportions orchestrates this event for the amusement of itself and others of its kind.
